Black Water (夜泉 yomi) is the malevolent force of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. It is similar to Malice, the Darkness, the Rift, which all cause spirits to become corrupted and vengeful. The shrine maidens of Mt. Hikami were sealed into reliquaries containing the black water. When Ose Kurosawa's ritual failed, vast quantities of black water erupted from her box, engulfing the whole area surrounding the mountain. In local folklore, black water was the opposite to Pure Water, feared by the locals as death and the Netherworld itself. A person who comes into contact with the water is considered tainted, a state in which the water erodes their bodies and gradually pulls the afflicted into the underworld.
