An earring of a beautifully adorned stone with the ability to speak and hearing the person who has the matching pair. The Echo Stone Earrings are key items in Fatal Frame III: The Tormented and crucial to completing the Echo Stone Earring Sidequest.
These earrings enable the wearer to hear the voice of the person who has the other pair. The term 'voice' is not used for vocal words escaping lips, but the deep thoughts and emotions. Akito Kashiwagi offered his beloved Kyouka two sets of these earrings before he departed the Manor of Sleep, with the intention of being able to communicate with her with his own set. Unfortunately, he was killed before he was able to leave and Kyouka never learned of his fate. After the birth of their son, Kaname, she gives him 3 of the earrings before sending him off. She hoped that after she gets her son out the mansion, Akito would find and recognize him with the earrings and raise him.
Kyouka kept the remaining earring in her room, showing it to her younger daughter, Amane.
When he became an adult, Kaname left the village to the city in pursuit of knowledge regarding his family and folklore of his hometown. He gave an earring to Reika before leaving, so the two of them would always be able to communicate. While in the city, Kaname became a willing participant in a research study performed by Dr. Kunihiko Asou, who was studying dreams. Kaname spoke of having dreams of a tattooed woman in the Kuze manor. However, he recognizing the earring and rush back to the village to find Reika. The earring Kaname wore was recognized by both his younger sister Amane, who helped him get to Reika and his grandmother Yashuu, after she kills him.
Kaname abandons all of his belongings in his haste to return home, including one of the earrings. Dr. Asou confiscates the earring for research purposes where it gets passed down his family line, eventually belonging to Yuu Asou. After Yuu's death, his fiance Rei Kurosawa finds the earring among boxed items in the attic of their home.
