Effigies were dolls used by the inhabitants of Mt. Hikami in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. Traditionally, they were made to house the spirits of deceased children to be used as offerings. Folklore of the area believed that all children made their own doll and if they were to pass before reaching adulthood, the doll would be placed within a shrine to contain their spirit. According to the Shrine of Dolls notes, the dolls would have names carved into them and sometimes possess pieces of the child such as hair or bone. Eventually, the tradition died out and became a game played by local children, similar to “hide and seek.”
