Ayane (あやね) is an unlockable crossover female character in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. She is a playable character in some bonus episodes of the game, which are unlocked after completing the main story of the game.

It was revealed in an interview with the website Siliconera that Ayane's inclusion in Fatal Frame V was done at the request of Nintendo.[1]

Biography[]

Childhood[]

90x55x2-267728

Ayane was conceived when Ayame (Ayane's mother and the wife of clan leader Shiden) was sexually abused by Raidou (Shiden's older brother and the progenitor of the Mugen Tenshin's troubles). Due to her dishonorable birth, the village took great fear and dislike towards Ayane, naming her "the cursed child" and turned her into an outcast. For some unknown reason, Ayane was not raised by her mother but was taken in by Genra (Adopted-Father), the leader of the clan's Hajinmon sect and wasn't told who her true family was.

Maiden of Black Water[]

Players must complete the games main storyline in order to unlock her bonus chapters that take place during the events of the game outside of the main story.

Ayane is hired to investigate the disappearance of a young woman by the name of Tsumugi, who was last seen headed towards Mt. Hikami, a place known for people to go to with the intent of suicide. When Ayane arrives on scene she uses an enchanted bracelet, that creates a glowing purple string that allows her to follow Tsumugi's trail and find her. She begins investigating the last place where Tsumugi was seen as shown by the bracelet, before being attacked by a hostile ghost. She attempts to fight them off with her Fuma Kodachi, however her weapons have no effect on the dead. She is then jumped by a mass group of spirits, before the scene fades to black. Ayane is then seen crawling away from the scene, wounded and unable to stand, stating that her standard battle tactics will not work in this situation.

She is later seen in a room, assumably healed, and is being given enchanted tattoos to protect her, and help prevent her from being noticed by the spirits. She is also being given a Spirit Stone Flashlight to help her combat the spirits, much like how players do with the Camera Obscura in the Fatal Frame series. From there it is a race for Ayane to save Tsumugi, while trying to stay alive at the same time.

Appearance[]

Her appearance is one of the most distinctive, due to her red eyes and straight purple hair, which is cut to the nape of her neck, with a front fringe, and is tied back with her favorite dark-purple bandana. In the first Dead or Alive, some of her costumes showed her with strawberry-blonde hair, although this is the only game to give her different hair color.

Originally, she was designed with a round face, with a small button-nose and wide eyes. In Dead or Alive 5, her face is now oval-shaped and her eyes have been slightly narrowed. Her height and weight are 5'5" (165 cm) and 114 lbs. (52 kg) respectively.

Her outfits are normally purple in color, bearing patterns and prints such as flowers and butterflies. Ayane's most iconic costume is a dark purple, strapless dress with a pink butterfly printed on the skirt, complete with matching pull-on sleeves, stockings, heeled boots, and a giant red or orange obi bow tied around her waist. Other recurring costumes for Ayane include a purple shozoku, a school uniform, and her training dummy costume, however, in Fatal Frame V she is shown wearing a black sleeveless jacket, a black corset top, black pants and black heeled boots with a black choker around her neck.

Personality[]

Mostly due to the way she was treated as a child, Ayane possesses a detached, cynical outlook on life and is completely driven by the desire to prove to herself and others that she is better than those that condemned her. As result, she turned into a determined, strong, secretive, mysterious, and deadly young woman, earning her the nickname "Female Tengu". She does have a tendency to talk down to people - mostly to her sister - and act antagonistically, possibly again due to her experiences while growing up. She despises anyone or anything reminding her of the past.

When in situations that do not involve her village or the people she grew up with, Ayane is shown to be a very kind and compassionate being. She puts others before her self, and looks out for the safety of those who can not defend them selves. When around people she idolizes, such as Ryu Hayabusa or Yoshitsune Minamoto, she speaks to them with the utmost respect. However has no problems with speaking to them on a personal level. If she senses that someone she cares for is having problems, regardless of their personality, social standing, or abilities, she will confront them about their problems and have them allow her to help them.

Etymology[]

  • The name Ayane is written in hiragana (あやね), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji (彩音, 綾音 or 絢音), it could possibly mean:
    • 彩音 - "color" (彩) (aya) and "sound" (音) (ne).
    • 綾音 - "design" (綾) (aya) and "sound" (音) (ne).
    • 絢音 - "brilliant fabric design, kimono design" (絢) (aya) and "sound" (音) (ne).

Trivia[]

  • Ayane's height is 5'1" (157cm).
  • Ayane's weight is 104lb (47kg).
  • Ayane acts like a very protective older sister to Tsumugi Katashina.
