The Guardians (fan translated as Tsukimori Shrine Maidens) were a group of healers who previously participated in the Rite of Descent. As these maidens had a high sixth sense, their main duty was to help find the Organs for the next Rite of Descent, later becoming the Rogetsu Kagura, and over roughly 108 days have them prepared for their performance during the lunar eclipse. When the rite failed with Soetsu Yomostuki's repurposed Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, the maidens would headed to the Lunar Odeum at the top of the Cape Tsukiyomi Lighthouse and play the Moonsong, with the intended purpose of calming the afflicted with the power of the music and the moon and stop the Day of Tranquility from progressing.
By the 1970's, the Guardians had long dissipated, but Sayaka Minazuki still taught her daughter Ruka the song that had been passed down her family and made it a goal to give Ruka the Guardian Mirror when she had perfected her piano skills so she may have the ancient Moonsong sheet music.
