Marie Shinomiya (篠宮鞠絵 Shinomiya Marie) was one of the five girls who was kidnapped and forced to become one of the Kanade during the Ceremony of Passage. She and the other four girls were later found and rescued by Choushiro Kirishima, and thus escaped Rougetsu Island. Years later, however, Marie died mysteriously, along with Tomoe Nanamura (Marie's friend).
Backstory[]
Marie was and raised on Rougetsu Island. At some point, she contracted Luna Sedata Syndrome and was sent to Haibara Hospital. Later, in an effort to cure the island's residents of the illness, You Haibara kidnapped Marie, Misaki Asou, Ruka Minazuki, Madoka Tsukimori and Tomoe Nanamura in order to use them as the five Kanade needed to perform the Ceremony of Passage. When the ritual failed, Marie and the other four girls all lost their memories and were rescued by Choushiro Kirishima. They were taken off the island, and therefore escaped the gruesome death that befell all of the island's residents at the hands of Sakuya Haibara.
Years later, Marie, along with Tomoe, died from finally succumbing to their illness.

- The name Marie means "ball" (鞠) (mari) and "picture" (絵) (e).
