Biography[]
Past[]
At an unknown point in time, Maya is selected to be sacrificed for an ancient ritual called Tokoyomi Ritual. The goal of the ritual was to have the shrine maiden become a vessel for the Gods, so the people of the village may communicate with them. For the ritual to work, Maya was raised in seclusion, her only contact was an Old Woman who provided her care. After receiving a purple diary, she begins to write in it, hoping one day she will get an answer from someone. Eventually, her wish is granted, and a different “Maya” begins to speak to her, forming a kinship.
When Maya is 15 a horrible plague destroys many of the villagers and they agree it is time to perform the ritual and ask the Gods for help. The Old Woman sewed Maya’s eyes and mouth shut so she may become a vessel. However, due to the connection she made with “other Maya” caused her form to crack, creating the Darkness that would curse everyone.
The darkness, using “other Maya” as a vessel to cause havoc and Maya took refuge in the old mansion with her diary. Because of the split, she forgets everything except her name. Meanwhile, the Woman in Black, the “other Maya” who wrote in the diary, was left with all of Maya’s memories and emotions and cursed to deal with those burdens alone.
Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir[]
Once freed by the player at the start of the game, Maya agrees to help solve the haunted diary. She eventually regains her memories and figures out the Woman in Black and her are the same person. Maya is overwhelmed with guilt for abandoning the Woman in Black, even admitting she was frightened of her. In desperation, Maya requests the player bring the two of them back together but before that can happen, Maya is pulled into the darkness.
Upon the Woman in Black’s defeat, “other Maya” begs to know why she left her alone. Maya apologizes, and promised to always be with her from then on. The two embrace as the doors close in the old home, ending the curse forever.
