Mourners are hostile male spirits in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly.

Background[]

Mourners are blind servants who spend the remainder of their lives in the underground tunnels. They fill both menial and ritual functions. Mourners maintain the tunnel system, assist the veiled priests, and attend the Hellish Abyss, especially when direct contact with the abyss is necessary, such as throwing sacrifices in while the priests and onlookers maintain a safer distance.

A prerequisite to receiving the role: all Mourners have gone blind and partly insane from glancing into the Hellish Abyss, either from accidental or forced exposure. It can be assumed the majority were former criminals within Minakami, since the common punishment for crime within the village is to be forced to look into the Hellish Abyss, blinding the criminal and condemning them to spending their life thereafter as a Mourner.

Appearance[]

Mourners are all male, and appear to wear a hakama skirt or similar on their lower halves, secured with a rope at the waist. They do not wear an upper garment. Instead, a thick rope is crisscrossed over their bare chests and upper backs, and wound around their arms . Mourners are bald or have their hair closely shorn to their heads, and a simple blind fold with sacred writing upon it is worn over their eyes. Mourners have the build of an emaciated manual laborer, never speak, though they emit guttural sounds, and are encountered exclusively in underground spaces, often in groups.

Battle[]

Despite being blind, the Mourners can still figure out where the player is, if the player starts to run. After hitting one of them with a camera shot, they'll start to swing their arms around wildy. If Mio happens to be in their attack range, they can hit her multiple times, inflicting a lot of damage. It's best to try to keep distance and let them wander close to Mio while she stands still for the best picture. As soon as the player takes a picture, they should run off to the side to avoid their swinging arms. They also appear in groups in of at least 2 or 3 and can get tricky when the character is surrounded by them. The best way to take them out is to lure them all to one side and take shots at them. Mio encounters 8 Mourners in the Underground Passage when on her way to the Hellish Abyss to save Mayu and have the final battle with the Kusabi. Their main purpose at this point is just to whittle down the player's item reserves before fighting the Kusabi, or the Kusabi and Sae Kurosawa if on Hard or Nightmare Difficulty.
