Tsubaki Tono is a hostile female spirit in Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.
She was a nurse at Rogetsu Hall and Haibara Infirmary, and appears as a ghost during the game.
Biography[]
At the suggestion of a relative, Tsubaki came to the island from the mainland and took a job as a nurse at Rogetsu Hall. She was soon put in charge of the third floor, helping patients afflicted with Moonlight Syndrome. Dedicated to her work, Tsubaki became known for her kindness and she, in turn, would participate in activities around the island as a way to show her gratitude for the opportunity.
At some point in the 1970’s, Tsubaki would be selected as the Vessel for the Rogetsu Kagura. Though she was not native to the island, her notes state how honored and excited she was to be such a huge participant in the festival.
Unknown to everyone except a select few, a secret dance was being performed at the same time with a completely different set of performers. During the public Kagura, Tsubaki’s dancing suddenly became erratic and strange, before she suddenly screamed. She and the other dancers the collapsed on the ground and died instantly.
According to her post mortem report, Tsubaki died of a heart attack. As with the island traditions, her face was cut off to be replaced with a mask, as a way to prevent the spread of illness.
Fatal Frame IV[]
Tsubaki's ghost seems to take on two hostile forms; when dressed in her Vessel attire, she attacks Ruka in Phase IX: Descent as a Vessel, and by herself in Final Phase: Hallowed Realm. In her appearances while Choshiro Kirishima is exploring Haibara Infirmary and the sanatorium during Chapter 7, Tsubaki instead has a peaceful form as a nurse helps to guide him along the way.
As a Vessel, Tsubaki will tend to make feints, allowing the player to deal damage against her with a Shutter Chance before eventually hovering forward to grab them for a Fatal Frame Shot. If Tsubaki performs a spin, she will immediately teleport to a different location. The true hazard in her first fight, however, is that Tsubaki is accompanied by the five Organs, who may attack the player if they are too focused on Tsubaki. Similarly to the fight with Kageri Sendo and Watashi, eliminating Tsubaki is the priority as the organs will respawn indefinitely until she is defeated. As such, the player can swap films mid-fight, using weaker films like Type-07 or Type-14 to keep the Organs at bay while hitting Tsubaki with more powerful Type-61 or Type-90 films. Her second fight with Ruka takes place in the corridor leading to the Cape Tsukiyomi Lighthouse. The fight is much simpler as Tsubaki is now alone, and her attacks are still close to her normal patterns as a Vessel. Due to the tight area that she is fought in, it can be easy for Tsubaki to phase into the wall when attacking Ruka.
